Queer Coffee Social

Celebrate queer joy and artistry during Refocus Film Festival and the Iowa City Book Festival! The Queer Coffee Social is a space for queer folks and allies to meet each other and be in community. This event is free to attend and open to the public.

Featured Artist: Mari Johnson

Mari Johnson is a painter, printmaker and cartoonist currently based in Iowa City. Drawing heavily on personal narrative, her work attempts to make sense of the blurred boundaries of body and mind, and the uncomfortable and (sometimes painful) reality of living in a body that is “different”. Oscillating between humanoid figures in vibrant color-scapes and overly disclosing, blunt aphorisms, she explores themes of deformity, gender non-conformity, neurosis, and the ever-shifting boundaries of the Outsider.
