International Granada Writers in Residence Programme 2024
Granada City of Literature Unesco, under the Department of Culture of the City of Granada, in collaboration with the University of Granada, through the Vice-Rectorate for University Extension, the Vice-Rectorate for Internationalization and the Vice-Rectorate for Social Responsibility, Equality and Inclusion, present a new edition of its International Writers’ Residency Program in Granada, created with the ultimate aim of strengthening international cooperation in the cultural sector in general and literary creation in particular, one of the objectives set by the city of Granada as a member of the Unesco Creative Cities Network (UCCN).

Granada City of Literature Unesco and the University of Granada created the program with the following objectives: to foster contacts and connections between literary authors from Granada and those from different cities and countries of the world; to promote the internationalization of literary authors linked to Granada; to foster the internationalization of the cultural fabric of the city of Granada; and to promote Granada as a cultural city and a city that welcomes international creative talent.

The Granada International Writers-in-Residence Program is dedicated to writers living in any country and writing in any language.

A stay of 30 overnight stays in Granada for two writers between November 4 and December 3, both inclusive, at the Corrala de Santiago of the University of Granada.

Granada City of Literature Unesco will cover the travel expenses of each of the selected writers.

The University of Granada will cover the accommodation expenses of the two selected writers in single rooms and full board at its guest residence Corrala de Santiago.

Granada City of Literature Unesco and the University of Granada will provide the writers-in-residence with opportunities to participate in the literary life of the city of Granada and contacts with local writers, as well as the possibility of participating in workshops and pedagogical activities.

Writers-in-residence must commit themselves to participate in activities related to the local literary system proposed by the Program.

Writers-in-residence will commit themselves to use the time of the residency to carry out their literary project, and may not carry out other public activities with other institutions, nor in other cities, without prior communication to those responsible for the Programme. Likewise, they will undertake to publicly disseminate (on social networks, etc.) their stay as international writers-in-residence in Granada.

-Have published at least two books (novel, essay, poetry, etc.), excluding self-publishing.

-Fill out the attached application form (open the pdf with Adobe Acrobat).

-Intermediate to advanced level of English or Spanish.

-Synopsis of the literary project you intend to develop during your stay in Granada.

It will be valued, although it is not compulsory:

-Knowledge of Spanish.

-Cultural and historical interest in the city of Granada.

-Excerpt from one of the author’s published books, translated into Spanish or English, with a minimum of 1500 words and a maximum of 3000.

-Letter(s) of recommendation.

It will be formed by experts proposed by Granada Unesco City of Literature and the University of Granada.

Wonju City of Literature offers a chance for one writer from cities of literature to come to Wonju and stay at Toji Cultural Centre for eight weeks, as Wonju City of Literautre’s international level contribution to the cities of literature sub-network, designed to promote the understanding and the friendship of cities of literature. In the call of 2024, just like the call out in previous years, one writer from cities of literature and/or who has a close connection to cities of literature will benefit from the CoL Wonju Residency 2024.

Please note that those interested in the Residency have to write only MS-Word document of more than 1,000 words but not more than 2,000 words(in font size 11 to 12), reflecting all the subjects numbered above. Disproportionate emphasis on only one or two subjects is not encouraged. Balanced approach to each subject is highly recommended.

Application not meeting 1,000 words or exceeding 2,000 words will result in a removal from the consideration. Besides, for fair assessment, additional portfolio and materials will not be accepted and they will not be either considered. Also, please do not forget to write in the document in which country and which city of literature you are currently living. If you are not currently living in a city of literature but if you are able to provide a reliable source of evidence suggesting you have lived in a city of literature and you are able to prove it, the application will be considered, all of which, however, will be verified through the contact with a focal point or coordinator of the city of literature once a final pick is done. And, the residency opportunity does not roll over to the next year even if the selected writer is not able to fly to Korea to stay at Toji Cultural Centre. In this case, the other writer that will be selected by Toji Cultural Centre will take the chance.

Language and Level

English is a must and applicants should possess the minimum command of B2 level for communication.

Selection and Notification

We will go through the 2nd phase of assessment based on the submitted document. One final recipient for the Residency will be decided by an independent panel designated by Toji Cultural Centre. Final notification will be available to both the recipient and the coordinator before June 27.

Requirements during Residency

There are no requirements whatsoever for a successful writer during his/her/their stay. We want the recipient just to relax and engage in his/her/their creative activity as much and comfortably as possible in such a tranquil environment around Toji Cultural Centre during the Residency. Korean writers and artists will stay at Toji Cultural Centre during the same period, and the writer is highly recommended to form friendship with them during his/her/their stay. Approximately sixteen up to nineteen writers and artists from Korea and also outside of Korea will stay at Toji Cultural Centre from September 1 to October 31. Just like other writers and artists, the selected recipient should follow the rules of living established at Toji Cultural Centre.

Kraków UNESCO City of Literature announces the 2024 call for applications for the International Residency Program for writers.

The Program is dedicated to all emerging writers, and poets having at least one published book working currently on a writing project and are willing to learn more about the Polish literary community. The Residency Program is a perfect opportunity to professionalize writing skills, find the optimal conditions for creative work, and present your own writing to a  new audience.

The call for applications for 2024 is now open. The deadline for application submission is the 31st of May.

What we offer:

In 2024 the Residency Program in Krakow will offer the writer a two-month stay in the following period of the year:

1st September – 31st October

Residents will stay at the apartment of Czesław Miłosz, Polish poet and Nobel Prize laureate.

Besides the stipend (2700 PLN gross/month) we cover transportation costs to and from Krakow. The Krakow Festival Office will guarantee residents the opportunity to participate in the literary life of the city and help to develop opportunities for them to promote their works in Poland.

What we expect:

  • Connection with any UNESCO City of Literature outside of Poland.
  • At least one published book (fiction or non-fiction), a poetry collection, screenplay or theatre script by the applicant.
  • Work on a literary project during the residency.
  • Upper-intermediate level of spoken English.
  • Interest in the Central European region.
  • Readiness to participate in the literary life of Krakow, including events, meetings promotional interviews and engagements, and festivals, where applicable.
  • Residents will be asked to write a text (work of fiction or non-fiction) that will feature the City of Krakow (min. 6 000 to max. 11 000 characters with spaces) in some fashion and will be used in the future, published collection for promotional purposes.

Faber, Residència d’Arts, Ciències i Humanitats de Catalunya a Olot

Faber offers working stays and exchanges for creative people, researchers and professionals in different areas, for scientists, writers, researchers, writers, artists, humanists, musicians, etc. Our residents have the best working conditions and an environment to accompany their projects. In Faber, there are eight spacious rooms, designed to provide comfortable working conditions. There are also several common areas where the residents will be able to exchange their experiences with each other, with the public and with institutions. The Residency is a space open to people from all over the world. Faber will take care of the residents’ stay, providing accommodation, half-board (breakfast and dinner) and a fully-equipped kitchen in case the residents would like to prepare their own lunch. Faber does not cover any travel costs. There is no per diem.

The Faber Residency is open to all disciplines related to arts, sciences, and humanities. It is offered six times per year, for four-week periods. Faber organizes several thematic residencies throughout the year where professionals from the Arts, Sciences or Humanities can come to spend a few days working on their projects and sharing experiences with the rest of the residents. During the stay, the residents collaborate in activities directed to students, professionals or public in general; activities in accordance with a project that will take into account previous demands and needs. Jiwar Creació i Societat

Jiwar has a special interest in receiving non-occidental writers and artists, as well as artists in danger or requesting political asylum because of dangerous situations in their countries of origin. Live and work in a comfortable space. Artists need to provide their own economical resources or grants, which Jiwar can help to obtain by writing letters of support or welcoming. During the stay of the artist, Jiwar offers to accompany the creative process and is able to organize once a month presentation of the work in progress. No meals or per diem are included.

The Writers Residence in Gröndalshús

Gröndalshús is the charming former home of writer, illustrator and scholar Benedikt Gröndal (1826-1907). This writer’s home in the heart of the old town in Reykjavík has  been renovated and opened as a cultural house and residency in 2017, run by the Reykjavík City of Literature.

The ground floor houses a residency flat for visiting writers, artists, scholars and translators of Icelandic literature who want to work in Reykjavik. It can be rented for a period of 2 – 8 weeks. The fee is  42.000 ISK pr. week which is well under the market prize of lodging in Reykjavík. The flat is fully furnished, with free wifi and is situated in the heart of the city within walking distance from all major cultural institutions, restaurants and other attractions. An additional charge of ISK 3.500 pr. week is charged for each additional guest.

Iceland Writers Retreat

The Iceland Writers Retreat is an annual opportunity for writers to participate in a series of workshops and panels led by an esteemed team of international writers. Between intimate workshops and lectures they’ll offer the chance to tour the spectacular Golden Circle, sit in the cozy cafes of Reykjavik, soak in geothermal hot springs, listen to new Icelandic music, meet contemporary Icelandic writers, and learn about the country’s rich literary tradition. Dunedin

The Robert Burns Fellowship

The Fellowship provides an office in the English Department and not less than the minimum salary of a full-time university lecturer, for one year. It is open to writers of poetry, drama, fiction, biography, autobiography, essays or literary criticism who are normally resident in New Zealand, and who, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, have established by their published work, or otherwise, that their writing would benefit from their holding the Fellowship.

The University of Otago College of Education/Creative New Zealand Children’s Writer in Residence

Remuneration of $28,000 is jointly funded by the University and Creative New Zealand and includes an office in the College. The 6-month residency is offered in association with the Robert Lord Writers’ Cottage Trust which provides rent-free accommodation to writers in the historic Titan Street cottage bequeathed by the late playwright Robert Lord. The Residency is open to established children’s writers who are normally resident in New Zealand.

The Caselberg Trust Creative Connections Residency

The Caselberg Trust, Dunedin, New Zealand, invites writers, composers, visual and performing artists to complete their creative projects in a harbourside cottage, situated on the Otago Peninsula, a well known haven of creativity and inspiration for many artists. Residencies can be funded or self-funded/sponsored. 

The Caselberg Trust’s ‘Creative Connections’ Residency support projects that reach out and make links across a variety of creative media, professional disciplines, and communities relevant to the planned project. Applicants must be able to demonstrate their ability to engage in a creative project and processes, to collaborate effectively with creative media, and with communities relevant to their identified project. The residency is 3 months.

Visegrad Fund

The Fund is an international donor organization, established in 2000 by the governments of the Visegrad Group countries—Czechia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia to promote regional cooperation in the Visegrad region (V4) as well as between the V4 region and other countries, especially in the Western Balkans and Eastern Partnership regions. The Fund does so by awarding €8 million through grants, scholarships and artist residencies provided annually by equal contributions of all the V4 countries. Other donor countries (Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, the United States) have provided another €10 million through various grant schemes run by the Fund since 2012.

Fellowships Programme for International Visitors

The University of Edinburgh’s Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) was established in 1969 to promote interdisciplinary research in the arts, humanities and social sciences. It provides an international, interdisciplinary and autonomous space for discussion and debate. Since its foundation more than 1000 scholars from 66 countries have held Institute fellowships; and up to 28 Fellows are in residence at any one time. Housed in a secluded 18th-century courtyard overlooking the Meadows, the Institute is adjacent to most centres of University activity.

Obidos

Obidos Literary Residency Program

The Obidos Literary Residency Program allows each author to stay between two weeks and up to two months. The Municipality provides a space for accommodation and the creation of the candidate project. The involvement of the author-resident in the community is increased, although the main objective of his/her stay is writing.

The objective is to welcome authors from all over the world, allowing them to immerse themselves in an environment of refuge, suitable for relaxing and creating works, as well as contact, in a privileged way, with Óbidos, its history, and identity. Proposals will be selected according to their cultural interest, consistency with the candidate’s path, and feasibility of the project. Applications are accepted all year.
