SUMMARY:A Hub\, a Network\, an Archive: 55 Years of International Writers in Iowa City
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit\, which is open August 22 – December 16\, 2022\, celebrates the 55th anniversary of the International Writing Program (IWP) at the University of Iowa. This program has brought close to 1\,600 writers from more than 150 countries to the UI since 1967\, and this exhibition tells the story of the IWP’s genesis\, its role in cultural diplomacy\, Iowa City as a site of literary praxis and global networking\, and the images of Iowa that writers have carried home with them through their work. Curators Nataša Ďurovičová and Lisa Gardinier dove into Special Collections & Archives materials\, including the Paul Engle Papers\, the International Writing Program Records\, the Toothpaste/Coffee House Press Records\, and more while researching for the exhibition. Also included are items from the UI Libraries circulating collection\, IWP’s Shambaugh House\, and friends of the IWP in addition to large portraits of writers by photographer Thomas Langdon.

DESCRIPTION:Special Collections & Archives is home to the Thomas Ollive Mabbott Papers\, an intriguing collection of materials compiled by Mabbott\, who was editor of the Collected Works of Edgar Allan Poe. The papers include sources and inspirations for Poe’s work\, first printings\, and more. See select items up close before meeting the master of Gothic horror himself\, portrayed by Darrin Crow\, in Morbid Curiosities – An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe. The 80-minute performance begins at 7:00 p.m. and features some of Poe’s most beloved stories and poetry\, including “The Masque of the Red Death\,” “The Raven\,” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.” \nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:Curator Guided Tour: Hey Buddy\, I’m Bill
DESCRIPTION:Hey Buddy\, I’m Bill tells the story of Bill Sackter\, the namesake of Wild Bill’s (formerly Wild Bill’s Coffee Shop) in the University of Iowa School of Social Work. From his early life in Minneapolis to his 44-year institutionalization for an intellectual disability to his years of friends and fame in Iowa City\, the exhibit shares a glimpse into Bill’s life and legacy. The exhibit also acknowledges some of Iowa’s own history with institutionalization and progress with disability rights\, and places Bill’s story in the context of the historic treatment of people with disabilities. The exhibit not only tells how Bill’s life embodied the disability practices and perspectives of his time\, but also how the national prominence of his life story helped America make progress toward better understanding and treatment of people with disabilities. \nThe exhibition features artifacts\, documents\, and ephemera from Bill’s life as well as ways for visitors to contribute stories about their own experiences with disability.

DESCRIPTION:Join co-curators Giselle Simón\, Elizabeth Yale\, and Damien Ihrig for a special guided tour of the current University of Iowa Libraries Main Library Gallery exhibition\, Paper Engineering in Art\, Science\, and Education. All are welcome to attend this free event\, which is being held in partnership with the Iowa City Book Festival. \nAbout the exhibit:\nPaper Engineering in Art\, Science\, and Education showcases the fascinating world of movable books and paper technologies. The exhibition invites visitors to enjoy seeing flap books\, pop-ups\, tunnel books\, volvelles\, and books that use paper to make sounds while learning about their historical and contemporary significance. \nPaper has long held a crucial role in communicating information to artists\, scientists\, and students. Medical flap books from the 16th to the 19th centuries provided an affordable way for physicians to gain hands-on knowledge about the body. Children’s books from the 18th century onwards used movable elements to instruct and entertain\, acting as precursors to interactive media. Artist’s books from the last century demonstrate how paper technologies can engage viewers in new and exciting ways.
