SUMMARY:Co-Crafting the Just City: A panel with Jim Throgmorton
DESCRIPTION:In this session a moderated panel of readers will discuss former Iowa City mayor Jim Throgmorton’s new book\, Co-crafting the Just City. In it\, Throgmorton narrates a story about how\, using democratic processes of governance\, the residents and elected leaders of the city tried from 2012 through 2019 to co-craft their city’s future while being immersed in a complex and often contentious flow of action. It also documents what happened when he and allies on the council tried during his terms as mayor of Iowa City from 2016 through 2019 to lead their city toward becoming a more inclusive\, just\, and sustainable place; that is\, a more “just city.” The book is not fiction. Nor is it a case study driven by social scientific theories and hypotheses. Rather it is a truthful story narrated by a key participant in the unfolding of events. Throgmorton invites readers to imagine that they are witnessing the unfolding from a ringside seat\, being party to what he was doing\, thinking\, and feeling as he participated in the action\, and he invites readers to imagine they are engaged in dialogue with him as the action proceeds. \nFeaturing James A. Throgmorton\, Mary Mascher\, Zachary Oren-Smith\, Ruthina Malone\, and David McMahon. \nThis event is live and in-person\, and will be streamed live at: https://www.youtube.com/thelibrarychannel

SUMMARY:BETH A. LIVINGSTON
DESCRIPTION:Despite efforts that have been made in the last few decades\, gender and racioethnic equity still hasn’t been achieved. What’s worse\, Black\, Indigenous\, Asian\, and Latina women are being held back more than their White counterparts. According to authors Beth A. Livingston and Tina Opie\, we need to change how we strive for equity. We must move beyond individual solutions toward collective action\, where people from historically power-dominant and marginalized groups work together\, so that all women experience the benefits of professional growth and equity.  Professor Tina Opie first started Shared Sisterhood as a movement to drive gender and racial equity in organizations. Since then\, she and professor Beth A. Livingston have worked together to spread the word to leaders across organizations\, with thousands of followers joining the cause. In this book\, they explain how to use vulnerability\, trust\, empathy\, and risk-taking to build Shared Sisterhood and break down three key parts of the process: (1) Dig into your own assumptions around racioethnicity\, gender\, and power\, (2) Bridge the divide between women of all backgrounds through authentic relationships\, and (3) Advance all women across the organization and beyond. Balancing a mix of history\, research\, and real-life examples–including the authors’ own experiences–this book encourages everyone to join Shared Sisterhood and advance equity for all. \nPublisher’s Weekly writes\, “The authors’ message will leave readers hopeful: ‘Don’t agonize\, organize\,’ they write\, quoting ‘the rallying cry of the feminist movement.’ Readers aiming to create equality at work will find great takeaways here.” \nThis event is live and in-person\, and will be streamed live at: https://www.youtube.com/thelibrarychannel

SUMMARY:Victor Ray
DESCRIPTION:From renowned scholar Dr. Victor Ray\, On Critical Race Theory explains the centrality of race in American history and politics\, and how the often mischaracterized intellectual movement became a political necessity. \nRay draws upon the radical thinking of giants such as Ida B. Wells\, W.E.B. Du Bois\, and Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, to clearly trace the foundations of critical race theory in the Black intellectual traditions of emancipation and the civil rights movement. From these foundations\, Ray explores the many facets of our society that critical race theory interrogates\, from deeply embedded structural racism to the historical connection between whiteness and property\, ownership\, and more. \nIn succinct\, thoughtful essays\, Ray presents\, analyzes\, and breaks down the scholarship and concepts that constitute this often misconstrued term. He explores how the conversation on critical race theory has expanded into the contemporary popular conscience\, showing why critical race theory matters and why we should all care. \nThis event is live and in-person\, and will be streamed live at: https://www.youtube.com/thelibrarychannel

SUMMARY:Sarah Kendzior
DESCRIPTION:In They Knew\, New York Times bestselling author Sarah Kendzior explores the United States’ “culture of conspiracy\,” putting forth a timely and unflinching argument: uncritical faith in broken institutions is as dangerous as false narratives peddled by propagandists. Conspiracy theories are on the rise because officials refuse to enforce accountability for real conspiracies. \nThey Knew discusses conspiracy culture in a rapidly declining United States struggling with corruption\, climate change\, and other crises. As the actions of the powerful remain shrouded in mystery—like the Jeffrey Epstein operation—it is unsurprising that people turn to conspiracy theories to fill the informational void. They Knew exposes the tactics these powerful actors use to placate an inquisitive public. \nIn Kendzior’s signature whip smart prose and eviscerating arguments\, They Knew unearths decades of buried American history\, providing an essential and critical look at how to rebuild our democracy by confronting the political lies and crimes that have shaped us. \nThis event is live and in-person\, and will be streamed live at: https://www.youtube.com/thelibrarychannel

SUMMARY:Elizabeth Crane
DESCRIPTION:One minute Elizabeth Crane and her husband of fifteen years are fixing up their old house in Upstate New York\, finally setting down roots after stints in Chicago\, Texas\, and Brooklyn\, when his unexpected admission—I’m not happy—changes everything. Suddenly she finds herself separated and in couples therapy\, living in an apartment in the city with an old friend and his kid. It’s understood that the apartment and bonus family are temporary\, but the situation brings unexpected comfort and much-needed healing for wounds even older than her marriage. \nCrafting the story as the very events chronicled are unfolding\, Crane writes from a place of guarded possibility\, capturing through vignettes and collected moments a semblance of the real-time practice of healing. At turns funny and dark\, with moments of poignancy\, This Story Will Change is an unexpected and moving portrait of a woman in transformation\, a chronicle of how even the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves are bound to change. \nThis event is live and in-person\, and will be streamed live at: https://www.youtube.com/thelibrarychannel

SUMMARY:Don McLeese in conversation with Kyle Munson
DESCRIPTION:Slippery Steps isn’t your typical\, hell-and-back recovery memoir. I never intended to quit drinking\, rarely gave it a thought. I’d spent decades as a successful and productive journalist. I was a loving husband and father. My life worked and worked well. Until it didn’t. Freedom from drinking has enriched my life in ways I’d never imagined. I’d been numbing myself to sleep\, and sleepwalking my way through life. It’s never too late to wake up. This is a book about how the worst day of my life turned out to be one of the best. – Don McLeese \nThis event is live and in-person\, and will be streamed live at: https://www.youtube.com/thelibrarychannel

SUMMARY:“Iowa Intersections” interview screening
DESCRIPTION:“Iowa Intersections\,” a partnership between the City of Literature and the University of Iowa’s Center for Language and Culture Learning\, is a community-based multilingual digital storytelling initiative. Working with partners such as Kirkwood Community College\, Open Heartland\, and the Congolese Association\, this initiative works with recent immigrants to the area to help them tell their stories. A handful of the first stories from this project will be screened at this presentation. \nThis project aims to share and uplift stories that celebrate the cultural and linguistic diversity in our area. In addition\, it creates opportunities for undergraduates to develop their intercultural communicative competencies —their ability to use their language skills to ethically engage with our multilingual neighbors. \n

SUMMARY:It Can’t Happen Here – A Staged Reading
DESCRIPTION:A cautionary dark satire about the fragility of democracy and how fascism can take hold even in the land of liberty\, It Can’t Happen Here follows the ascent of a demagogue who becomes president of the United States by promising to return the country to greatness. Witnessing the new president’s tyranny from the sidelines is a liberal\, middle-class newspaper editor from Vermont who trusts the system will fix itself—until he ends up in a prison camp. Sinclair Lewis’ eerily prescient 1935 novel gets a fresh update in this adaptation that examines what brings a citizenry to the point of sacrificing its own freedom and how a courageous few can prevail to overcome the fall.
