SUMMARY:Tracie Morris: human/nature poems
DESCRIPTION:Weaving intimate portraits of home with what could be the travel journals of a 21st-century troubadour\, Tracie Morris’s human/nature poems is a hymn to the human and more-than-human world. These poems bear the record of a state of heightened perception\, springing from the displacements of travel and returning\, of memory and its triggers\, of global pandemics\, ecological catastrophe\, political unrest\, and mourning. With great precision and abundant insight\, Morris articulates the seam of our “human/nature”: “Sol has hands in Cairo\, in Luxor / today He Rises. I wonder where / the outstretch lands. It matters knot / what circles your head. What your / kin says is power. Aspects of ever / lasting light\, life is always made from parting.”

SUMMARY:Marta McDowell: Gardening Can Be Murder
DESCRIPTION:With their deadly plants\, razor-sharp shears\, shady corners\, and ready-made burial sites\, gardens make an ideal scene for the perfect murder. But the outsize influence that gardens and gardening have had on the mystery genre has been underappreciated. Now\, Marta McDowell\, a writer and gardener with a near-encyclopedic knowledge of the genre\, illuminates the many ways in which our greatest mystery writers\, from Edgar Allen Poe to authors on today’s bestseller lists\, have found inspiration in the sinister side of gardens. \nFrom the cozy to the hardboiled\, the literary to the pulp\, and the classic to the contemporary\, Gardening Can Be Murder is the first book to explore the mystery genre’s many surprising horticultural connections. Meet plant-obsessed detectives and spooky groundskeeper suspects\, witness toxic teas served in foul play\, and tour the gardens—both real and imagined—that have been the settings for fiction’s ghastliest misdeeds. A New York Times bestselling author herself\, McDowell also introduces us to some of today’s top writers who consider gardening integral to their craft\, assuring that horticultural themes will remain a staple of the genre for countless twisting plots to come. \n

SUMMARY:The Machine Stops: A New Opera by John Lake and Cecile Goding
DESCRIPTION:The Machine Stops: A New Opera by John Lake and Cecile Goding\nSelected Videoclips and Talkback \nOpera fan and UI Professor Emerita Miriam Gilbert leads a talkback session on The Machine Stops: A New Opera by John Lake and Cecile Goding\, joined by the opera’s lead soprano Élise DesChamps (UI School of Music) and sci-fi scholar Brooks Landon (UI Dept. of English). \nThe Machine Stops\, featuring a libretto written by Iowa author and UI workshop graduate Cecile Goding and original score composed by Iowa City musician John Lake\, debuted at the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts in July 2022. Based on a 1909 science fiction story by E. M. Forster\, the opera imagines a world where all reality is filtered through The Machine. Everyone lives alone\, communicating solely through their hand-held devices. Sound familiar? \nSelected videoclips of the CCPA production of The Machine Stops will be shown. Audiences responded to the debut performance with high praise: “Surprisingly contemporary;” “a powerful experience;” “a stunning success;” “beautiful and complex;” “gorgeous music and strong libretto.” \n

SUMMARY:Curator Guided Tour: Hey Buddy\, I’m Bill
DESCRIPTION:Hey Buddy\, I’m Bill tells the story of Bill Sackter\, the namesake of Wild Bill’s (formerly Wild Bill’s Coffee Shop) in the University of Iowa School of Social Work. From his early life in Minneapolis to his 44-year institutionalization for an intellectual disability to his years of friends and fame in Iowa City\, the exhibit shares a glimpse into Bill’s life and legacy. The exhibit also acknowledges some of Iowa’s own history with institutionalization and progress with disability rights\, and places Bill’s story in the context of the historic treatment of people with disabilities. The exhibit not only tells how Bill’s life embodied the disability practices and perspectives of his time\, but also how the national prominence of his life story helped America make progress toward better understanding and treatment of people with disabilities. \nThe exhibition features artifacts\, documents\, and ephemera from Bill’s life as well as ways for visitors to contribute stories about their own experiences with disability.

SUMMARY:Anonymous Was a Woman (ticketed event)
DESCRIPTION:A pre-concert lecture by Marian Wilson Kimber will begin at 6:30 p.m.\, followed by the concert at 7:30 p.m. \nFriday\, June 23\, will see MusicIC present Anonymous Was a Woman\, an intimate concert at 7:30 p.m. at Riverside Theatre (119 E College Street)\, drawing connections between two powerhouse women: Prominent English author and feminist icon\, Virginia Woolf\, and composer Dame Ethel Smyth – the first female composer to be granted a damehood. The program will begin with Smyth’s Violin Sonata in A minor (Op. 7)\, written in 1887. Though the classical music canon has historically relegated her to a footnote\, Smyth is enjoying some long overdue recognition\, both for her distinctive musical voice and larger than life personality. Ahead of her time\, Smyth was a suffragette and defiantly out about her sexuality and relationships with women. \nFollowing Smyth’s Sonata\, audiences will be treated to a semi-staged version of Dominick Argento’s song cycle From the Diary of Virginia Woolf\, which won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for Music\, the same year in which it was premiered in Minneapolis. Smyth and Woolf would meet near the end of their lives and continue a fruitful intellectual and artistic relationship\, lasting until Woolf’s suicide in 1941. By pairing Smyth’s music and Woolf’s private words\, we can begin to allow the deeply personal etchings of these two women to fully come to the forefront\, in a way they were unable to during their lives. \nBefore the concert\, music scholar\, author\, and University of Iowa Professor Marian Wilson Kimber will give a pre-concert lecture exploring the development of works by women artists and the barriers they faced. General admission tickets to the Friday\, June 23\, concert are $20; $10 for students. They are available at the Riverside Theatre box office\, by calling (319) 259-7099\, or emailing boxoffice@riversidetheatre.org. \n \n

SUMMARY:The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales
DESCRIPTION:Free screenings from 10 a.m. – noon.  \nThe countryside isn’t always as calm and peaceful as it’s made out to be\, and the animals on this farm are particularly agitated: a fox who mothers a family of chicks\, a rabbit who plays the stork\, and a duck who wants to be Santa Claus. If you think life in the country is a walk in the park\, think again! Directors Benjamin Renner and Patrick Imbert adapt Renner’s own acclaimed graphic novel into a delirious\, delightful triptych of interlocking stories\, with a pacing and visual spontaneity that harkens back to classic Looney Tunes shorts and slapstick two-reelers. But underneath the gags (and there are plenty of them)\, the three stories offer a sensitive and beautiful portrayal of family\, and the anxieties of modern life. \n“Ideal viewing for young children.” – Chicago Reader \n“A delightful animated anthology which brings three laugh out loud stories to the big screen with wit and grace.” – HeyUGuys \n“Appropriate for ages 5+.” – Common Sense Media \n \n

SUMMARY:Jerald Walker – James Alan McPherson and His Making of a Dragon Slayer
DESCRIPTION:Jerald Walker\, author of the 2020 National Book Award finalist How to Make a Slave and Other Essays\, will discuss that work and more. \nFor the black community\, Jerald Walker asserts in How to Make a Slave\, “anger is often a prelude to a joke\, as there is broad understanding that the triumph over this destructive emotion lay in finding its punchline.” It is on the knife’s edge between fury and farce that the essays in this exquisite collection balance. Whether confronting the medical profession’s racial biases\, considering the complicated legacy of Michael Jackson\, paying homage to his writing mentor James Alan McPherson\, or attempting to break free of personal and societal stereotypes\, Walker elegantly blends personal revelation and cultural critique. The result is a bracing and often humorous examination by one of America’s most acclaimed essayists of what it is to grow\, parent\, write\, and exist as a black American male. Walker refuses to lull his readers; instead his missives urge them to do better as they consider\, through his eyes\, how to be a good citizen\, how to be a good father\, how to live\, and how to love. \n\nCo-presented by  The UI Lecture Committee\, the Iowa Writers’ Workshop\, UI African American Studies\, the UI English Department

SUMMARY:Lori Erickson and Jennifer Ohman-Rodriguez: The Art\, Craft and Call to be a Spiritual Writer
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, two of Iowa’s leading spiritual writers discuss their work. Spiritual writing is a growing subgenre in fiction as well as in memoir\, poetry\, meditations\, and self-help. It may or may not be aligned with an organized religion\, faith\, belief system\, or philosophy\, yet all spiritual writing seeks to discover human truths and also typically struggles with how we live and develop in the midst of something larger than ourselves. This field of writing is as ancient as the earliest sacred texts and as ongoing as the poetry of Mary Carr\, the theology of Howard Thurman\, the novels of Marilynne Robinson\, and the wisdom of Thich Nhat Hanh. Jennifer Ohman-Rodgriguez and Lori Erickson discuss their own spiritual explorations as a basis for their writing and the value of this type of writing for all seekers.

SUMMARY:“Iowa Intersections” interview screening
DESCRIPTION:“Iowa Intersections\,” a partnership between the City of Literature and the University of Iowa’s Center for Language and Culture Learning\, is a community-based multilingual digital storytelling initiative. Working with partners such as Kirkwood Community College\, Open Heartland\, and the Congolese Association\, this initiative works with recent immigrants to the area to help them tell their stories. A handful of the first stories from this project will be screened at this presentation. \nThis project aims to share and uplift stories that celebrate the cultural and linguistic diversity in our area. SUMMARY:Elizabeth Weiss
DESCRIPTION:All Harriet Szász has ever known is life onstage with her sister\, Josie. As “The Sisters Sweet\,” they pose as conjoined twins in a vaudeville act conceived of by their ambitious parents\, who were once themselves theatrical stars. But after Josie exposes the family’s fraud and runs away to Hollywood\, Harriet must learn to live out of the spotlight—and her sister’s shadow. As Josie’s star rises in California\, the Szászes fall on hard times. Striving to keep her struggling family afloat\, Harriet molds herself into the perfect daughter. She also tentatively forms her first relationships outside her family and begins to imagine a life for herself beyond the role of dutiful daughter that she has played for so long. Finally\, Harriet must decide whether to honor her mother\, her father\, or the self she’s only beginning to get to know. \nFull of long-simmering tensions\, buried secrets\, questionable saviors\, and broken promises\, this is a story about how much we are beholden to others and what we owe ourselves. Layered and intimate\, The Sisters Sweet heralds the arrival of an accomplished new voice in fiction.

DESCRIPTION:“Nowhere near famous but still infamous\,” Psalm One is a legend to rap nerds\, scholars\, and “heads\,” and has gone on to work with the brightest names in rap and have her work celebrated and taught around the globe. SUMMARY:Elizabeth McCracken
DESCRIPTION:Ten months after her mother’s death\, the narrator of The Hero of This Book takes a trip to London. The city was a favorite of her mother’s\, and as the narrator wanders the streets\, she finds herself reflecting on her mother’s life and their relationship. Thoughts of the past meld with questions of the future: Back in New England\, the family home is now up for sale\, its considerable contents already winnowed. \nThe woman\, a writer\, recalls all that made her complicated mother extraordinary—her brilliant wit\, her generosity\, her unbelievable obstinacy\, her sheer will in seizing life despite physical difficulties—and finds herself wondering how her mother had endured. Even though she wants to respect her mother’s nearly pathological sense of privacy\, the woman must come to terms with whether making a chronicle of this remarkable life constitutes an act of love or betrayal. \nThe Hero of This Book  is a searing examination of grief and renewal\, and of a deeply felt relationship between a child and her parents. What begins as a question of filial devotion ultimately becomes a lesson in what it means to write. At once comic and heartbreaking\, with prose that delights at every turn\, this is a novel of such piercing love and tenderness that we are reminded that art is what remains when all else falls away.

DESCRIPTION:Slippery Steps isn’t your typical\, hell-and-back recovery memoir. I never intended to quit drinking\, rarely gave it a thought. SUMMARY:Jennifer L. Knox
DESCRIPTION:The poems in Jennifer Knox’s darkly imaginative collection\, Crushing It\, unearth epiphanies in an unbounded landscape of forms\, voices and subjects―from history to true crime to epidemiology―while exploring our tenuous connections and disconnections. From Merle Haggard lifting his head from a pile of cocaine to absurdist romps through an apocalypse where mushrooms learn to sing\, this versatile collection is brimming with dark humor and bright surprise. Alongside Knox’s distinctive surrealism\, Crushing It also reveals autobiography in poems about love\, family\, and adult ADHD\, and Knox’s empathetic depictions of the ego’s need to assert its precious\, singular “I” suggest that a self distinct from the hive\, the herd\, the flock\, is an illusion. With clear-eyed spirit\, Crushing It swallows all the world\, and then some.

SUMMARY:Elizabeth Crane
DESCRIPTION:One minute Elizabeth Crane and her husband of fifteen years are fixing up their old house in Upstate New York\, finally setting down roots after stints in Chicago\, Texas\, and Brooklyn\, when his unexpected admission—I’m not happy—changes everything. Suddenly she finds herself separated and in couples therapy\, living in an apartment in the city with an old friend and his kid. It’s understood that the apartment and bonus family are temporary\, but the situation brings unexpected comfort and much-needed healing for wounds even older than her marriage. \nCrafting the story as the very events chronicled are unfolding\, Crane writes from a place of guarded possibility\, capturing through vignettes and collected moments a semblance of the real-time practice of healing. At turns funny and dark\, with moments of poignancy\, This Story Will Change is an unexpected and moving portrait of a woman in transformation\, a chronicle of how even the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves are bound to change. \nThis event is live and in-person\, and will be streamed live at: https://www.youtube.com/thelibrarychannel
