DESCRIPTION:Angie Cruz is a novelist and editor. Her fourth novel\, How Not To Drown in A Glass of Water is forthcoming Fall 2022. Her novel\, Dominicana was the inaugural book pick for GMA book club and chosen as the 2019/2020 Wordup Uptown Reads. It was shortlisted for The Women’s Prize\, longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction\, The Aspen Words Literary Prize\, a RUSA Notable book and the winner of the ALA/YALSA Alex Award in fiction. It was named most anticipated/ best book in 2019 by Time\, Newsweek\, People\, Oprah Magazine\, The Washington Post\, The New York Times\, and Esquire. Cruz is the author of two other novels\, Soledad and Let It Rain Coffee and the recipient of numerous fellowships and residencies including the Lighthouse Fellowship\, Siena Art Institute\, and the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Fellowship. She’s published shorter works in The Paris Review\, VQR\, Callaloo\, Gulf Coast and other journals. She’s the founder and Editor-in-chief of the award winning literary journal\, Aster(ix) and is currently an Associate Professor at University of Pittsburgh. She divides her time between Pittsburgh\, New York and Turin. \nAngie Cruz is presented in collaboration with the University of Iowa Magid Center for Undergraduate Writing.

DESCRIPTION:Despite efforts that have been made in the last few decades\, gender and racioethnic equity still hasn’t been achieved. What’s worse\, Black\, Indigenous\, Asian\, and Latina women are being held back more than their White counterparts. According to authors Beth A. Livingston and Tina Opie\, we need to change how we strive for equity. We must move beyond individual solutions toward collective action\, where people from historically power-dominant and marginalized groups work together\, so that all women experience the benefits of professional growth and equity.  Professor Tina Opie first started Shared Sisterhood as a movement to drive gender and racial equity in organizations. Since then\, she and professor Beth A. Livingston have worked together to spread the word to leaders across organizations\, with thousands of followers joining the cause. In this book\, they explain how to use vulnerability\, trust\, empathy\, and risk-taking to build Shared Sisterhood and break down three key parts of the process: (1) Dig into your own assumptions around racioethnicity\, gender\, and power\, (2) Bridge the divide between women of all backgrounds through authentic relationships\, and (3) Advance all women across the organization and beyond. DESCRIPTION:In this session a moderated panel of readers will discuss former Iowa City mayor Jim Throgmorton’s new book\, Co-crafting the Just City. In it\, Throgmorton narrates a story about how\, using democratic processes of governance\, the residents and elected leaders of the city tried from 2012 through 2019 to co-craft their city’s future while being immersed in a complex and often contentious flow of action. It also documents what happened when he and allies on the council tried during his terms as mayor of Iowa City from 2016 through 2019 to lead their city toward becoming a more inclusive\, just\, and sustainable place; that is\, a more “just city.” The book is not fiction. Nor is it a case study driven by social scientific theories and hypotheses. Rather it is a truthful story narrated by a key participant in the unfolding of events. Throgmorton invites readers to imagine that they are witnessing the unfolding from a ringside seat\, being party to what he was doing\, thinking\, and feeling as he participated in the action\, and he invites readers to imagine they are engaged in dialogue with him as the action proceeds. \nFeaturing James A. DESCRIPTION:Rebecca Solnit has been named the eleventh recipient of the Paul Engle Prize\, presented by the Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature organization. \nSolnit is a writer\, historian\, and activist who has written more than twenty books on feminism\, environmental and urban history\, popular power\, social change and insurrection\, wandering and walking\, hope and disaster\, including Whose Story Is This?\, Call Them By Their True Names (Winner of the 2018 Kirkus Prize for Nonfiction)\, Men Explain Things to Me\, The Mother of All Questions\, and the recent memoir\, Recollections of My Nonexistence. \nShe has received a Guggenheim\, the National Book Critics Circle Award in criticism\, and the Lannan Literary Award. A product of the California public education system from kindergarten to graduate school\, she is a columnist at the Guardian and a former “Easy Chair” columnist at Harper’s.Speaking about the award\, Solnit said she was honored to be recognized. \n“Finding out\, while still on the first cup of tea\, that you’ve won a prize\, and it’s named after a poet\, editor\, and teacher passionately devoted to internationalism and the literary community\, is a very good way to start the day\,” she said. “To receive a prize that has gone to writers I admire so much—Alexander Chee\, Roxane Gay among them—deepens my sense of the honor of being invited into the community of writers\, past and present\, and it encourages me to keep trying to do the kind of engaged work this prize recognizes.” \nThe prize includes a $20\,000 award and a one-of-a-kind work of art. \nSolnit will receive the award and appear in conversation with Lyz Lenz\, Thursday\, September 29 at 7 p.m. at the Coralville Public Library. \n \n \nThe annual Paul Engle Prize from the Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature honors an individual who\, like Paul Engle\, represents a pioneering spirit in the world of literature through writing\, editing\, publishing\, or teaching\, and whose active participation in the larger issues of the day has contributed to the betterment of the world through the literary arts. The Paul Engle Prize is made possible through the generous support of the City of Coralville\, which is home to 11 permanent sculptures with artistic and literary ties to Iowa. The sculptures all have ties to work found in The Iowa Writers’ Library\, housed in the Hyatt Regency Coralville Hotel & Conference Center\, which features about 800 books written by former students\, graduates and faculty of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. \nPaul Engle (October 12\, 1908 – March 22\, 1991)\, though best remembered as the long-time director of the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop and founder of the UI’s International Writing Program\, also was a well-regarded poet\, playwright\, essayist\, editor and critic. \nThis prize does not recognize one work\, nor is it solely limited to reflecting literary achievement. Rather\, the award seeks to recognize a writer\, like Engle\, who makes an impact on his or her community and the world at large through efforts beyond the page. It also seeks to raise awareness about Engle and his works. \nPast recipients: James Alan McPherson\, longtime instructor at the University of Iowa Writer’s Workshop and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Elbow Room; Kwame Dawes\, Chancellor Professor of English at the University of Nebraska\, and Editor of Prairie Schooner; Luis Alberto Urrea\, author of The Devil’s Highway and Queen of America\,  Sara Paretsky the author behind the bestselling Chicago-based V.I. Warshawski mystery series\, Roxane Gay\, professor\, editor\, commentator and author of the short story collection Ayiti\, the novel An Untamed State\, and the essay collection Bad Feminist\, and novelist\, activist\, essayist\, and professor Alexander Chee; novelist and essayist Dina Nayeri; poets and co-founders of Cave Canem Toi Derriocotte and Cornelius Eady; and poet and essayist Dr. Eve L. Ewing.

Insatiably curious\, she learns to read\, and finds the book of Aethon\, who longs to turn into a bird and fly to paradise. As she reads\, the walls are bombarded.
