Where can you place your Little Free Library in Iowa City

The Little Free Library International website has some ideas at http://www.littlefreelibrary.org/how-to-information.html. In the Iowa City area many of these same rules exists but it is preferred that all LFL’s be placed on private property or City parkland. The location between the curb and the sidewalk is not recommended for a couple reasons:

  • In winters with heavy snow, this area can become filled with snow from the street and the sidewalk and make the LFL inaccessible.
  • It can present a hazard if a vehicle hits it and sends it sailing through the windshield.

If you want to locate the Little Free Library on the property where you live, and you own the property, you can locate it anywhere on your property as long as you understand that interested readers will enter your property to check out your Library. You might want to consider locating it about one foot back from the sidewalk which still encourages visitors to visit your Library but still stand on public property.

VERY IMPORTANT – Please contact Iowa one Call at www.iowaonecall.com or dial 811 or call 1-800-292-8989 at least 48 hours prior to digging (excluding Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays). You should plan on locating a marker where you want to locate your Library and Iowa One Call will have all necessary utility companies visit your property and mark where their particular utility lines are located. Gas, phone and cable lines are particularly vulnerable because they are oftentimes not buried very deep. Digging through one of these lines is a nuisance and can be expensive!
