On the Fly video series receives NEH funding

The Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to develop a video series and website showcasing the work of Iowa writers as part of a national public outreach program to expand access to the city’s many valuable writing resources.

The On the Fly: Writers on Writing video interview series, began in 2010. To date, more than 60 videos have been produced, featuring Iowa authors and visitors to the area, all discussing the craft of writing. The videos can be found here.

“Iowa City has had an outsized influence on American literature,” said NEH Chairman Jim Leach. “In granting it a City of Literature designation, UNESCO recognized the innovative leadership role that the Iowa Writers Workshop and the International Writing Program have played in fostering creativity through the written word.”

NEH’s Chairman’s Grant will fund two additional years of programming in the series, to be filmed and released throughout 2013 and 2014. More than 50 videos will be added to the series thanks to this funding. The funds also will allow the City of Literature to create a dedicated web site to host the videos, and to pursue more opportunities to air the videos in public spaces and in educational settings.
