Iowa Youth Writing Project offers weekend workshops

The Iowa Youth Writing Project (IYWP) has three new Iowa City weekend workshops open for registration:

Women’s Writes is a workshop for teens of all genders interested in writing creatively about gender identity what it means to be a woman today. Participants will attend three workshops on 10/28, 11/4 and 11/11, in order to generate creative work and practice revision and performance. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet and work with special guest writers from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and the International Writing Program! The workshop will culminate in a reading, and participants will have the opportunity to have their work published online and in print.

The story of YOUR Life offers teens a chance to hone writing skills and develop an original voice, together in a safe community.  Participants will meet for six Saturdays starting October 27 at the Iowa City Public Library to practice memoir writing.  So often teens can feel as though life is happening to them; through writing, this can change.  Join the IYWP for the first round of what will definitely be a liberating, empowering and unique workshop.

Holiday Cheers! is an opportunity for kids ages 8 – 12 to join visual artists from Public Space One in creating holiday ornaments.  Public Space One and the Iowa Youth Writing Project will be representing the state of Iowa by designing and creating the ornaments for Iowa’s Christmas tree in President’s Park as part of the 2012 National Christmas Tree Display in Washington, D.C.  Through writing and art exercises, kids will brainstorm the best ways to represent Iowa in all its diversity.  The ornaments will reflect Iowa’s literary heritage by using a “speech bubble” shape, fusing literary and visual art in the design.  This program will be held October 28.
